Metal Polishing

Pickling Stainless Steel

Pickling is the process we use to eradicate impurities from stainless steel surfaces. Pickling is a critical step in order to create surface purity, a requirement for the formation of a protective passive layer, which reduces the chemical reactivity of the steel.

The most widely adopted chemical method for removing oxidation from stainless steel in South Africa is by pickling paste, which often results in an incomplete job.

We are proud to say we are one of the only companies in South Africa that use immersion techniques. The specially formulated pickling solution removes welding oxides, heat discolourations, and other contaminants with minimal effect on the stainless steel itself.

Electro-Polishing Stainless Steel

In simple terms, electropolishing can be viewed as the reverse of electro-plating. Instead of plating a metal item for protective and decorative purposes, stainless steel can be electro-polished for the same purposes.

As good as stainless steel is, this process will enhance its corrosive resistant properties by a factor of nearly 80 times.

Electropolishing significantly improves the integral properties of your equipment/parts. The process results in improved rust prevention capabilities, passivity, and metallic purity. It also creates a shiny finish, suitable for decorative purposes. All at a low cost.

Having adopted the process over 25 years ago, we are known as specialists in electropolishing of stainless steel.

Passivation of Stainless Steel

Passivation is the process of treating your stainless steel to reduce the chemical reactivity of its surface. Stainless steel is already regarded as being corrosion-resistant. But passivation is used as a means of strengthening the natural coating by enhancing exterior protection.

Lengthy machine processing can result in the presence of various contaminants which can weaken the surface of the metal and cause corrosion. The danger of these oils and debris can’t be seen with the naked eye, so they’re often overlooked and surfaces tend to deteriorate unknowingly.

Through passivation, stainless steel becomes more resistant to air, water, and extreme environments. The process also achieves low corrosion rates and assists in the prevention of rust.

Mechanical Polishing

We provide mechanical polishing/buffing services upon request. This is beneficial when refurbishing old stainless steel fittings that are in need of a bit of rejuvenation. It removes any stains and pitting caused by corrosion on the stainless steel’s surface.

If requested, mechanical polishing is completed after the pickling stage, before our electropolishing process.

Fun Fact

What Are the Different Types of Steel? According to the World Steel Association, there are over 3,500 different grades of steel, encompassing unique physical, chemical, and environmental properties. We are proud to say we haven’t found one yet that we cannot clean.
